Slippers For Good

A few weeks ago I was on Twitter browsing through conversations to see if there was anyone out there with a question I could answer. I do that periodically because it’s a great way to meet others that you may find as clients, customers, colleagues or friends. On this particular day I found a message that read:

“Like to knit or crochet? We need slippers for adults in the House. Let us know if you can help!”

Well, I like to knit and crochet, I also know a lot of other people who like to knit or crochet, so I responded:

“I think I can find someone to help you. What type of slippers would you like and what size?”

I was excited to see that I could help more than one person. How? Because although I love to crochet, I don’t do it much for sale any more. I create patterns and I help others develop their businesses. So what I thought to do was give a crochet business the opportunity to work with this, what I thought was a ‘potential buyer’. A message came back and it read:

“Awesome!!! We need a variety of adult sizes. Would you mind emailing me at —- ? Thank you!”

I sent an email, and as much as I would love to take you through the whole conversation I won’t. Suffice it to say, my heart was warm and fuzzy when I realized I hadn’t found a potential customer, I’d found a deserving charitable cause.

Ronald McDonlad House Southern AlbertaThe Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta provides a home away from home for out-of-town families with sick children receiving medical attention in a Calgary hospital. Though the House has grown and changed since opening in 1985, the purpose remains the same – keeping families together in a compassionate and comfortable, home-like atmosphere.

Ronald McDonald House® Southern Alberta is inviting, yet secure; welcoming, yet private. It is a place for entire families to use, enabling them to keep their lives moving forward as normally as possible – despite their medical crisis.

As long as I’ve been around I’ve heard of the Ronald McDonald house. We all know they’re out there, but how much do we really know about them? I’ve left my change and McDonald’s many times because it seemed like the right thing to do, with no real thought of where it was going. Now I know.

What the Ronald McDonald House® in Southern Alberta is doing is helping families stay together in a very tough time on their journeys. The tweet was a request for slippers, so I’m answering the call and asking you to help.

Project “Slippers For Good” begins today, September 30, 2013 and goes until November 15, 2013! I will be collecting slippers of all sizes from babies up to mens to ship to the Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta right before Thanksgiving! If you knit, crochet, sew or whatever you can do to make a pair of house slippers, please do it! The more the merrier! All slipper donations can be shipped to me at:

Sedruola Maruska

P.O. Box 208
Lancaster, MA 01561

I’ll be taking slipper donations until November 15, 2013 (please do not send any money) because the following week I’ll gather everything together and ship it all to Canada. It would be wonderful if along with your donation you sent a card letting them know why you were moved to send a donation and I will include it with the package.

Sometimes the best way to move past what may be weighing you down in your life is to do something selfless for someone else. I will be making a pair or two of slippers for this donation because it will give me time with my hook and yarn, and also time with my thoughts. Won’t you join me?

Do you think I could do this for my RMH? They helped us 13 years ago when we needed help and I would love to keep it local

    • Yes! I think they would really appreciate it! Contact the person responsible for their fundraising I think that would be a good place to start. Good luck!

  2. Thank you for your inspiration and open heart.

“Hi! Just wanted to say that you did a GREAT job of explaining the HDC (half double crochet) edging for a single crochet blanket in your YouTube video. Thank you so much! God Bless” - Donna M.
